FiveThirtyEight Manipulates Data





FiveThirtyEight, a fairly respected statistics and polls source, showed some less than honest sleight of hand in their polling predictions. Nate Silver, the contributing author, shows a graph that is supposed to tell us that from past debates statistics we can expect Hillary to jump 2 to 4 points in the polls. Silver wants you to think that he has crunched the numbers, when in reality he deceitfully included outlier data (Bill’s debates in 92) and mirrored the results on the bottom of the graph to manipulate his viewership into thinking that winning debates leads to poll jumps. Statistics can seem accurately driven on the surface, but all it takes is some clever manipulation to spin the facts.
