For years, Republicans have campaigned on securing our elections. We’ve talked about it at rallies, debated it on cable news, and promised voters we would restore trust in the system. Now we finally have a bill that actually does it. And suddenly… some Republicans are hesitating?

President Donald Trump says he won’t sign any new legislation until Congress passes the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act. Good. Honestly, it’s about time someone treated election integrity like the top priority it should be.

The SAVE Act is not radical. It’s basic. It requires proof of citizenship to register to vote, mandates voter ID, limits mail-in ballots to legitimate situations like military service, disability, or travel, requires regular audits of voter rolls, and adds criminal penalties for officials who knowingly register ineligible voters.

In other words, it does what most Americans already assume our elections do.

The most absurd part of the debate is that Democrats are framing this as some kind of voter suppression scheme. Their argument boils down to the idea that requiring ID disenfranchises minority and women voters because they supposedly don’t have identification.

Think about how insulting that actually is.

You need an ID to fly, to buy alcohol, to open a bank account, to pick up prescriptions, and in many states to buy cold medicine. But Democrats want Americans to believe minority voters somehow cannot manage to obtain the same ID required for dozens of everyday activities. The soft bigotry embedded in that argument is stunning.

And the public is not buying it.

According to Pew Research, 83 percent of Americans support requiring a government-issued photo ID to vote, including 71 percent of Democrats. That kind of bipartisan agreement is almost impossible to find in modern politics. When eight out of ten Americans agree on something, Congress should not need months of handwringing to act.

So why the resistance?

Democrats oppose it for obvious reasons. If you benefit from a chaotic election system, you probably don’t want rules that tighten it up. If I were an election cheater, like the Democrats so obviously are, I definitely wouldn’t like the SAVE Act.

The more confusing question is why Republicans are dragging their feet.

This is exactly the kind of legislation Republican voters have been demanding for years. It is popular. It is common sense. And it addresses one of the biggest drivers of political distrust in the country.

If Republicans believe what they say about election integrity, then this should be the easiest vote they ever take.

The SAVE Act has already passed the House. The Senate needs to move it forward immediately. With the 2026 midterms on the horizon, there is no excuse for delay.

Secure elections are not a partisan issue. They are the foundation of the entire system.

And if Congress can’t pass a bill that 83 percent of Americans support, then it’s fair to ask what exactly they’re doing there.
