A House of Dynamite will make you so mad

Published

on

A House of Dynamite has critics and audiences in a tailspin and for good reason. Academy Award winning director Kathryn Bigelow brings to life an all too realistic scenario where a nuclear missile is headed for a large city in the United States and the people we trust to protect us must make a decision about what to do.

With an all star cast, A House of Dynamite challenges audiences to accept anxiety and fear and to resist jumping to conclusions. But is the challenge too hard?

The Conservative Critic asks: Is it entertaining, does it have artistic/intellectual value? Is it liberal propaganda?

Conservative Critic Meter Check: A House of Dynamite

Overall rating: Dare I say, Dynamite?

A House of Dynamite is as dynamite as the title implies. The story of a nuclear attack headed for the United States is told in real time from the perspective of several different players responding to the event. The set up is immediately gripping, the performances are strong and the audience spends the whole time wondering what we would do if we were the ones making decisions. The arguments for all the different policy proposals are made strongly and are relatively realistic (with some Hollywood wiggle room) to what certain people, depending on their position in government, would argue in this kind of event. Viewers are challenged and pick sides quickly and feel emotional connections to the characters facing the challenges in front of them.

But any viewer watching the movie will be made so angry by the ending. That doesn’t mean it’s not great. The ending is what separates the movie from a pedestrian streaming political thriller for the masses (nothing wrong with those, I love those) and art. The ending makes the movie. And will make you furious.

Is it entertaining?

Rating: Thrilling

It’s a good political thriller where the stakes are very high and the setting feels entirely plausible. The way the story switches perspectives to several players for only about 15 minutes each segment keeps the pace moving even though only 15 minutes of real time has been covered over and over again. There is nothing tedious about the recovering of ground. At every new opportunity to analyze the pressing situation, viewers are invited to reassess their opinion and feel the urgency of decision making when lives are on the line. The movie feels almost interactive.

Does it have artistic/intellectual value?

Rating: Great acting, great vision, insightful writing with minor flaws

A House of Dynamite combined the power of strong direction, writing and acting. The plotl seems like it would be overplayed and yet I can’t think of any movie covering the same ground at least not in the same way. Bigelow’s vision seems razor sharp and laser focused on what could otherwise be a puff piece about unlikely “whatifs.” Even for an industry insider, A House of Dynamite feels plausible because of how artfully the film is made and how carefully the characters are constructed.

The performances and character development when shoved into such a small box is what is spectacular about the film which almost presents as a series of short films instead of one long movie. Rebecca Ferguson as Captain Walker in charge of the White House situation room is as Ferguson always is which is captivating and stern but extremely easy to root for (she really is the leading lady of the moment). Jared Harris as Secretary of Defense Baker gives the film’s most emotional performance of both Secretary Defense and a father who has a complex relationship with his daughter.

Gabriel Basso as Deputy National Security Advisor Baerington and Tracy Letts as General Brady both provide critical performances as political actors with entirely different ideologies and agendas which are both revealed in a time of crisis to be deeply held. Idris Elba as the President is extremely credible exuding both a total lack of grasp on what to do and the ego and credibility to make the decision anyway. Between these three characters is the most dialogue that to an untrained ear would seem unrealistically ernest and bloviatory. But to anyone who has ever spoken to an official at the Pentagon or a White House senior advisor, these pieces of dialogue are the most realistic of the entire film.

But in particular, Greta Lee shines as a government scientist on her day off enjoying Civil War reenactments with her son, a little bothered by her boss calling her about some alleged crisis when she’s supposed to be having family time. Lee’s performance is short but it provides the most reality to the movie’s scary real world presence. She isn’t being given all of the information, she doesn’t really grasp how serious it is. And she is supposed to be having family time and doesn’t really have time for all of it.

By and large, the writing and editing is stellar and really makes the movie. If there is a flaw it’s that there are perhaps too many characters not all of which end up having any particular relevance to what the film is trying to achieve. While they provide more examples of real human reaction to a national crisis (of which they are not fully informed), they don’t offer much else.

Is it liberal propaganda?

Rating: No its everyone propaganda

The movie has all kinds of propaganda, it’s just not strictly leftist or right wing. It’s more war hawk versus wide eyed globalist. The movie definitely posits the idea that the United States has been too soft on Russia and perhaps on war actions in general. But the war mongers in our government are not a single party. The uniparty thirst for war is ever present no matter whose name you tick at the ballot box. The idea that the US is unprepared for a nuclear strike, to be fair, is critical for the logic of the movie to be allowed to advance. So while it’s propagandic in nature, it’s also the entire premise of the movie so it sort of has to be that way.

But most of the political ideas in the movie are presented with balance. The characters have constructive conflict about the right move in a stressful time. Frankly it’s a little hopeful.

Conclusion

A House of Dynamite is one of the best movies of the year and definitely a must watch for anyone with a political interest.
