First COVID, Now Hantavirus: Here We Go Again

Published

on

Remember when we were told COVID was an existential threat to everyone? When questioning lockdowns got you labeled selfish, anti-science, or worse? When schools closed, businesses collapsed, people died alone in hospitals, and Americans were told sacrificing basic freedoms was the only “rational” response to a virus that ultimately had around a 1% fatality rate, overwhelmingly concentrated among the elderly and vulnerable?

Now the same crowd is back doing the exact same song and dance.

This time it’s Hantavirus. And suddenly liberals want to admit COVID had a relatively low fatality rate and mostly impacted older people… but somehow we’re also supposed to immediately panic and start entertaining lockdown rhetoric again because “this time it’s real.”

Megan McArdle’s tweet perfectly captures the problem. She argues Hantavirus would justify lockdowns because it kills a higher percentage of symptomatic people. Fine. But people making posts like this forget they already used this exact framework before. That’s how they talked about COVID when they demanded unprecedented government control over a virus they framed as universally deadly. They already told Americans the experts knew best while moving the goalposts every six months.

And now they’re shocked the public doesn’t instantly respond with blind obedience the second another scary virus enters the conversation.

The answer to failed lockdown policies is not “trust us harder next time.” The answer is learning from the damage those policies caused in the first place.

No lockdowns. Ever.
