Is Kim Kardashian’s new show the worst one ever made?
Kim Kardashian is starring in a new show on Hulu, All’s Fair about an all female run law firm specializing in divorce and family law. The show also stars Academy Award nominee, Emmy and Golden Globe winner, Glenn Close, Academy Award Nominee, Naomi Watts and Emmy Award Winning Niecy Nash – so with all the talent you’d think Hulu knew what it was doing with this Kim Kardashian led new show.
But do they know what they’re doing?
The Conservative Critic asks: Is it entertaining? Does it have artistic/intellectual value? Is it liberal propaganda?
The Conservative Critic Meter Check: All’s Fair
Overall Rating: Really so very bad
All’s Fair is one of the worst things I’ve ever seen on TV or streaming and I’ve seen a lot of things. Because of the flamboyantly hideous costumes and the award heavy cast, it seemed like the show might be very campy and self aware and therefor very worthwhile and fun. However, the show inserts an extremely serious plotline into its absurd scale and ridiculous dialogue making it clear that it either has no intention of camp or is extremely offensive (or perhaps both).
The dialogue is so cringey its impossible to watch without being embarrassed, the styling is insane, and the structure is actually somehow kind of boring and convoluted at the same time.
All’s Fair might be the worst show of the year.
Is it entertaining?
Rating: It isn’t campy enough to be funny
The scale is very cartoonishly large including very bright and flamboyant costumes which lends itself to the idea its meaning to be a little funny, a little camp or absurdist. But it never really commits to the bit enough to actually be enjoyable. There is a restraint in it that holds it back from being something interesting. The legal procedural side of the show is really an after thought to the leading characters personal dramas and for that reason the viewer also doesn’t get the simple pleasure of a court room drama. Its somehow ridiculous and bland at the same time.
Does it have artistic/intellectual value?
Rating: Kim K isn’t as bad as you’d think
The show is extremely bad. The set up is rushed, the dialogue is as if an alien from another planet watched a satirical sketch about how women speak to each other and thought that was real and then created the characters around that viewing. Ryan Murphy, the show’s creator, has done load of successful campy satire including a personal favorite, Scream Queens. Its clear based on the names of the characters, the concept and the insane wardrobe and set design that this show at one point was meant to be sort of funny. So I don’t know what happened between his vision and the final product but its dreadful. It doesn’t do anything interesting and whatever message the show thinks it has, it entirely fails to communicate. It plays like its supposed to be a run of the mill legal procedural but then is just really really badly written.
On the bright side, Kim Kardashian is actually not bad in the show at all. Her performance is as good as anyone’s except Sarah Paulson who does the best work of them all playing an actually campy revenge hungry foil, Carrington Lane, to the lead cast. Kim has atrocious material to work with as does Niecy Nash and Glenn Close and Naomi Watts is really barely even in the show I think she’s said like four words its baffling. But Kim K being not that bad of an actor does not do anything to save the show: in fact, it might make it worse.
Is it liberal propaganda:
Rating: Kind of but mostly its just extremely offensive
The show is kind of liberal (if it was successful in its messaging at all) with a very “girl boss/girl power” message. But mostly it gets a harsh rating on messaging because its so offensive. As bad as the show is and how its seems to be very unsuccessfully going for “camp” – it has a very serious rape plotline thrown in. It is really jarring and insane that they would have such a serious plotline in a show where Kim K’s character wears buttless pants to the workplace. The sheer amount of fedoras worn disqualifies this show from a rape story.
Conclusion
All’s Well is the worst show I’ve seen in a long time despite having a great cast and theoretically a good idea for a satire on legal procedurals. It’s a definite skip and a strong contender for the Freedoms and Fails (Fail obviously) later this year.
