Some Conservatives Just Don’t Want to Win
I’ve come to an uncomfortable conclusion about a certain segment of conservatives: they are addicted to losing.
Not necessarily to actually losing elections. They’re addicted to the feeling of losing.
They need to be betrayed, act eternally disappointed, and shout about how the Republican Party sold them out again, Trump abandoned them, Washington failed them, and absolutely NOTHING they demanded has actually been accomplished.
This administration is throwing them off by doing big things. And still, they’re upset.
When something big is accomplished? Well, suddenly that wasn’t the thing they really cared about anyway.
The goalpost moves. Again. And again. And again.
At some point, this stops being principled skepticism and starts looking suspiciously like the exact liberal victim complex conservatives have mocked for decades.
You’re not actually being let down. You have invented an ever-changing standard of success specifically designed to make sure you can never acknowledge a win.
Take President Trump’s second term.
You can disagree with individual decisions. You can criticize the administration. You can want more. Obviously.
But saying Trump has “done nothing” or “hasn’t delivered” is so detached from reality that I can barely take the argument seriously.
Alex Bruesewitz made this point perfectly this week when someone asked what Republicans even have to celebrate. He rattled off a list: the One Big Beautiful Bill, permanent extensions of the 2017 tax cuts, no tax on tips, no tax on overtime, Trump Accounts, major border enforcement changes, deportations, Remain in Mexico, the Laken Riley Act, cuts to DEI programs, reductions across the federal bureaucracy, changes to childhood vaccine recommendations, record energy production and more.
You can argue over the merits of any one of those things.
What you cannot credibly argue is that nothing has happened.
The tax legislation alone enacted no-tax-on-tips and no-tax-on-overtime provisions, made major elements of the 2017 tax law permanent and created Trump Accounts for newborns.
Immigration may be the clearest example of how insane this dynamic has become.
For years, conservatives begged for a government that would take the border seriously. Now immigration has fallen so dramatically that Brookings researchers estimated net migration in 2025 was somewhere between negative 10,000 and negative 295,000 — potentially the first negative year in at least half a century. CBO separately found that the category including illegal entrants and certain parolees had already gone sharply net-negative.
This is a HUGE victory for us!
And somehow there are conservatives responding with: Yeah, well, what about this other thing?
MAHA is doing this just as bad, if not worse, than MAGA.
For YEARS, health-minded moms complained that the federal public-health establishment was too rigid, too dismissive of parents, and too unwilling to revisit its assumptions.
Then the Trump administration actually ordered a review of the childhood vaccination schedule.
The CDC subsequently changed the framework, narrowing the vaccines routinely recommended for all children while moving others into high-risk or shared-clinical-decision categories. Access and insurance coverage were preserved.
That is a substantial policy change.
But instead of celebration, we get: but what about glyphosate?
What about imported food?
What about this other thing I have decided is the single most important test of whether this administration loves me?
Come ON.
If the administration tackled all of those things TOMORROW, the same people would wake up the following morning demanding action on something new. By the weekend, they’ll have discovered another issue whose absence from federal policy proves the entire movement was a fraud all along.
There will never be enough because enough is not the objective. Outrage is.
And you see the exact same phenomenon with the DeSimp faction, the Massie brigade and various professional anti-establishment influencers whose entire brand depends on the establishment always betraying them.
If government ever actually delivers something they demanded, they have a problem.
Because then what?
They might have to admit something worked.
They might have to acknowledge progress.
They might even have to be… satisfied for five minutes.
God forbid!
None of this means conservatives should become mindless cheerleaders.
Trump is not infallible. Neither is his administration. Republican politicians should absolutely be pressured when they fail, challenged when they’re wrong, and pushed to do more.
But there is an enormous difference between saying “this was a good step, now keep going” and insisting every victory doesn’t count because you have retroactively invented a different standard for victory.
A movement that cannot recognize its own victories cannot build upon them. A voter base conditioned to believe that every politician inevitably betrays them eventually decides there is no point voting at all. A political culture fueled entirely by anger eventually has to invent new reasons to stay angry.
I get it. Sometimes you really are being betrayed. Sometimes your leaders really do fail you.
But sometimes… you actually won. We need to learn to tell the difference.
