The Conservative’s Guide To The 2021 Oscar Nominations

Published

on

On March 15 the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced their nominees for the biggest award in film all year, The Oscars. The Conservative Critic has been reviewing the short list contenders for Best Picture and I will continue to do so leading up to the show on April 25, 2021. So keep checking for new reviews!

Other than the best picture race, there is one stand out nomination with a result you can be certain of:

Chadwick Boseman, Best Actor for his role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

Chadwick Boseman recently passed away very young of colon cancer. In addition, his performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom was genuinely transformative. There is no question he will posthumously be receiving this award. Especially since his only real competition, Daniel Kaluuya for his role in Judas and the Black Messiah, was nominated in the Supporting category (inexplicably, considering he played the lead character). Clearly the Academy would like to celebrate both actors and Boseman will be taking Best Actor and Kaluuya will be taking Best Supporting Actor.

Who is going to take Best Picture? Its a horse race between Nomadland and Mank.

You have seen the Conservative Critic Review of Nomadland but I haven’t reviewed Mank yet. So the jury is still out on which is the better film. However, Nomadland and Mank are both nominated in the crucial categories which indicate who will be taking home the shiny gold statue which are Best Director, Best Cinematography and best leading actor.

Nomadland is nominated, in addition to Best Picture, for: Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Director, Best Actress, and Best Cinematography.

Mank edges out Nomadland with nominations for: Best Sound, Best Production Design, Best Costuming, Best Original Score, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Directing, Best Cinematography, and two nominated actors one in Supporting Actress and one in Actor.

From the looks of the nominations, Mank really has it in the bag. However, historically sometimes the film with the most nominations and buzz is beaten out by a competitor who simply had a more streamlined approach to filmmaking. This was the case between La La Land (gag) and Moonlight in 2017. La La Land was significantly more nominated than Moonlight due to the nature of its being a big musical but ultimately Moonlight took the prize.

The full list of Best Picture Nominees are:

  1. The Father
  2. Judas and the Black Messiah
  3. Mank
  4. Minari
  5. Nomadland
  6. Promising Young Woman
  7. Sound of Metal
  8. The Trial of the Chicago 7

The Conservative Critic will be reviewing all of these films for you and giving you a full rundown on which are the most deserving nominations and which are liberal political nonsense nominations.

Here is a full list of Oscar nominations from the academy.
