The Biden administration negotiated with Russia this week to release WNBA star Brittney Griner, who was held for months in Russian prisons on drug charges.
As a condition of Griner’s release, Biden agreed to a one-for-one prisoner swap for international arms dealer, Viktor Bout, who is known as the “merchant of death.”
The decision stirred controversy for Biden, considering the high cost of the dangerous exchange because Russia has also been holding another prisoner: Former U.S. Marine Paul Whelan.
Biden’s press secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre told the media that while they were able to bring Griner, bringing Whelan back was just not an option.
“Unfortunately, the choice became to either bring Brittney home or no one,” she said.
Many are upset that the Biden administration may have favored Griner’s release because she is an outspoken liberal activist who frequently trashes America. But most Americans agree that every citizen deserves to come home.
