Democrat Senator Finally Figures Out Why Voters Think His Party Is Crazy
Democratic Senator Mark Kelly has conducted an extensive investigation into why Americans have such a negative view of his party.
His conclusion: It might have something to do with all the crazy things Democrats keep saying.
Groundbreaking.
During an interview with Katie Couric, the Arizona senator acknowledged that voters increasingly associate Democrats with demands to abolish police departments, eliminate prisons, dismantle border enforcement and defund the Pentagon.
Kelly conceded that those ideas “don’t make sense” to most Americans and could cost Democrats seats in the midterm elections. He has reportedly directed approximately $10 million toward candidates he considers electable and practical.
Kelly deserves a small amount of credit for recognizing the obvious.
The problem is that he is treating the Democratic Party’s radicalism like an unfortunate branding mix-up.
Americans did not randomly associate Democrats with open borders, anti-police activism and soft-on-crime policies because a Republican consultant hypnotized them. Democratic politicians, activists, donors and media personalities spent years promoting those ideas.
Democratic officials entertained it, repeated it and—in several cities—acted on it. When the predictable consequences arrived, the party suddenly became very concerned about nuance.
Kelly insists this is not the Democratic Party he belongs to. That may be true for him personally. Maybe he doesn’t support every ridiculous proposal generated by the party’s activist class.
But Democrats have developed a convenient little system.
The far left introduces an insane idea. Mainstream Democrats refuse to condemn it until polling becomes catastrophic. Then, just before an election, someone like Kelly appears to assure voters that nobody important ever believed any of it.
Meanwhile, the activists move on to the next insane idea.
Kelly is also “seriously considering” a presidential campaign in 2028, which may explain his sudden enthusiasm for political moderation. Nothing inspires a centrist awakening quite like imagining yourself in Iowa.
He has identified the symptom correctly. But the Democratic Party does not merely have a messaging problem.
It has a personnel problem, a policy problem and a recurring inability to tell its loudest lunatics “no.”
The good news for Kelly is that admitting you have a problem is the first step.
The bad news is… his party isn’t going to stop causing the problem.
