Of course you could own a cannon – in fact, there wasn’t a shipowner in the colonies or the new United States that didn’t own cannons. Local militia groups certainly owned cannons as did individuals if they had the wherewithal to afford one. That’s the point of the “militia clause” in the 2nd Amendment – pointed out that the citizenry had the right to own any weapon which a militia might need. AND that understanding was confirmed in the 1939 Sup. Ct. case of Miller v. US, wherein the Court held that the citizenry had the right to acquire and keep and bear any weapon “in common use among military forces”. And don’t try to turn the “militia clause” into a limitation of the right – it’s not a condition of the right, it’s addressed to the government so that they would understand that the purpose was to allow people the means to oppose an organized military force (i.e., the right to rebellion, sanctified in the Declaration of Independence – you know, all that “when in the course of human events” stuff). I sure hope that this moron didn’t actually teach Constitutional law if he got it that wrong.
