Vivek Accidentally Told the Truth About School — And Parents Should Pay Attention
Someone recently posted a clip today where Vivek Ramaswamy casually suggests making school year-round and extending the school day from 7 to 4, “so you don’t have to pay for childcare.”
I hate that idea, but honestly? He deserves a thank you for it. Because he is just saying the quiet part out loud.
Much of the modern education system isn’t designed around childhood development, learning science, or what’s actually best for kids. It’s glorified childcare. It is state-run babysitting. They’ve stretched out our days to keep parents in the workforce, slaving away, as long as humanly possible. That’s why the hours keep getting longer. Not because it magically makes kids smarter, but because it keeps tax revenue predictable and steady.
Locking children in classrooms for eight-hour shifts doesn’t improve education. And it doesn’t improve quality of life for many children!
Parents feel this instinctively. It’s why so many of us are choosing homeschooling, co-ops, hybrid schooling, and anything that looks more like childhood and less like an assembly line.
If politicians want to redesign the school calendar to look like some kind of manufacturing fulfillment schedule, fine — but at least be honest about what it is, like Vivek accidentally was. It’s a labor policy, not an education plan.
