Democratic and Latina president of the Los Angeles City Council, Nury Martinez, was recorded with three other members of Latino leadership from the council making derogatory, hateful, and racist remarks about their colleagues and their constituencies.
In a 2021 meeting, Martinez along with Gil Cedillo and Kevin de León and Los Angeles County Federation of Labor President Ron Herrera said that their white council colleague, Mike Bonin, treated his black son like an “accessory” and then compared the child to a monkey which is an offense which has banished conservatives from any and all societal interaction ever again (see Roseann Barr). Along with other coarse words about Bonin they criticized him for being “in with the Blacks.”
The recording also showed that Nury and the group wanted city redistricting should be based on ethnic neighborhoods, segregating people on purpose and keeping them mixing races and that they consulted with the LA Labor organization deeply on redistricting policy and not with other stakeholders in the same intimacy.
The recording also included commentary from Nury and the group indicating they thought that their indicted fellow council member, Ridley-Thomas, who had been suspended from city council should still receive his big paycheck and that only “white” members of the council will “f*ck” you if you commit a crime.
Martinez has resigned as Council president but not yet from her set as a member of City Council despite many calls for her to do so. She also did apologize along with Leon..
Cedillo and Herrera did not immediately apologized. Cedillo claimed he didn’t recall the conversation and Herrera’s big labor lawyers responded with hostility simply stating the recording was illegally made and distributed. Herrera has resigned from his position at the labor organization.
