Amy Acton’s Own Mother Says DON’T Vote for Her… But Is That The Real Story?
Usually, a candidate’s mother is the easiest endorsement they’ll ever get.
Apparently not in Amy Acton’s case.
The Ohio Democratic gubernatorial candidate is making headlines after her own mother appeared in a political attack ad calling her daughter a liar and urging voters NOT to elect her.
Talk about awkward family reunions.
The ad has sparked a firestorm, and Republican candidate Vivek Ramaswamy has confirmed it came from his campaign.
But I’m going to say something that apparently needs to be said in politics these days: Not every ugly family dispute needs to become a campaign commercial.
I genuinely hate watching family drama play out in public. Especially in politics.
As a mother, you couldn’t PAY me to publicly humiliate my children like this. I don’t care how deeply I disagreed with them politically. I don’t care how frustrated I was. There are some things that should be bigger than politics, and the relationship between a mother and her children is one of them.
Which makes the idea that political operatives would take a mother’s public condemnation of her daughter at face value absolutely astounding.
Especially THIS mother.
Acton’s mother, Donna Arthur, isn’t exactly an unimpeachable character witness. Court records confirm she lost custody of her children after her husband was accused of sexually abusing Acton when she was a child. Acton’s brother has publicly supported his sister’s account and says their mother remained married to the accused man afterward.
That’s some pretty significant context to leave out when presenting someone as the ultimate authority on her daughter’s character.
And frankly, the whole thing is unnecessary.
Because Amy Acton’s actual political record gives Ohio voters plenty to criticize without dragging her childhood trauma into it.
This is the woman who helped oversee Ohio’s sweeping COVID lockdowns as the state’s health director. She signed stay-at-home orders that restricted businesses, gatherings, and everyday life.
She also supports expanding gun background checks and implementing red-flag laws, policies that raise serious Second Amendment and due-process concerns.
And on the cultural issues dividing America, voters deserve straight answers about parental rights, gender identity, and medical treatment for minors.
Those aren’t petty personal attacks. They’re legitimate questions about how someone intends to GOVERN.
And they’re questions that matter a hell of a lot more than whether her estranged mother likes her.
I don’t need Amy Acton’s mother to tell me whether Amy Acton should be governor. I need Amy Acton to explain why Ohioans should trust her with MORE government power.
That’s the argument Republicans should be making.
THAT is what this election should be about.
